Today I was called a "tree-hugging, baby-killing liberal". While I was stunned, the girl was also quick to remark that she was surprised I wasn't left handed. (Although I have to admit, that's a good one.)
Simply because I said I found it interesting that most politicians who were pro-life were also pro-death penalty. I was torn between what I wanted to call her (something along the lines of a pushy, intolerant bible thumping conservative) and saying "thank you". Thankfully, Mr. Pickup put a quick end to the, ahem, "civilized discussion". I bet that's the last time he ever lets Roe vs. Wade be debated in his classroom. Am so happy that this class was Mr. Pickup's and not Mr. Butler's. I think Mr. Butler would use those words to describe me himself.
My debate is "Do you think the UN is effective?". I'm con side, which is good, and I'm paired with another con person. Yayee, go me. ::cheerleader moves::
Was also repressing the urge to kill the chamber choir members. They are apprently not aware that I would commit murder to be in chamber choir, and maybe Mrs. Dean should choose people who are willing to try, practice, and perform over those who can without a second thought. The brats.
But, rather than going and seeing TTT after school tomorrow, I am getting out half an hour early. Hurray. This is indeed a Good and Joyful Thing.

I would have said one of those, probably would have gone with the former ;) You're quite right btw and I agree with you 100% on pretty much everything you've said in this post, especially about the UN thing...but that's a whole can of worms that I could go on and on about forever! You're too cool for that town of yours Liz, no wonder you want to get out.

Wow, I've got to get out of Sultan. Tis sad. Oy vey, though, I detest bible thumpers. I'd love to *thump* them with a bible. A couple of times.
And it sounds like you've had an exciting day! Chamber choir, what's that? And yayee!! You'll be seeing TTT when I am! Pat and Mike are taking me, I believe. There's no better bonding experience than good looking guys, lots of action and violence, and pretty scenery, eh?
Re:
Eee! I will be with you in spirit, love! I'll even deck Little Joe for you everytime he talks (which will be nearly the entire 3 hours -_-).
Pro-life and pro-capital punishment
Can I explain this? If you want to delete this off your comments after you read it, go right ahead, though. I am pro-life and pro-capital punishment. I don't hold all life on the same level. An unborn child is innocent and I see it as a person. I think that it does not deserve to be killed because the mother did something stupid. (I'd be interested in the statistics about rape/incest/abuse abortions vs. birth control abortions; I haven't been able to find them on the web.) So on the one hand we have an innocent life.
Then we have a murderer. Someone like Osama or Ted Bundy or Tim McVeigh or Andrea Yates. They are utter scum. And, no, I don't think they deserve to live. They took life, lots of life, and they weren't sorry. How is letting them live in jail a punishment when they don't care what they did? So that's the other side.
I don't think the two lives can be equated.
That's all.
Cheers,

How are you defining "effective"? And in what areas of the UN's remit? For instance, is the fact that the UN has essentially kept the entire Palestinian refugee community alive for nearly 55 years a success? Or are you limiting it to Achieving World Peace? And what are you recommending to replace it? And is it not true that the fact that the Great Powers at the time (including the USA) essentially punched big holes in the idea by insisting on veto powers? Is it not also true that the US has been unconscionable in its pre-9/11 refusal to pay its UN dues...and then suddenly turn around and pay up when it wants the world to come on its Let's Bomb Afghanistan/Iraq/Whoeverthehellwewantto World Tour?
--J, wishing you good luck in your debate
Re:
I just think its something that looks better on paper than working; like communism. If you have the right people in charge, sure. It could work. But so far, it doesn't seem to work. The UN can debate, sign, etc., but its a fact of life: not everyone is going to agree. It seems extremely idealistic to me, and I don't think its working like Wilson thought it would.

Essentially, if you are arguing against the UN, you want to squirrel your motion so that you discuss only the bits of the UN which are about Achieving World Peace.

There it is, the odd tendency of American conservatives to use 'liberal' as an insult. You should tell her that the majority of the Western world uses 'liberal' as a compliment.
Anyway, that 'insult' shows that you must be doing something right. :D

*snorts* Oh, that is too funny. Left-handed, really; you're right, that is good. Next time I'm debating with someone I'll have to whip it out on 'em. They'll jump three feet in the air.
I'm against abortion and the death penalty, so I haven't got an issue with your statement. "Justice" isn't for us to decide when it comes to life and death, and a human life is a human life no matter how you slice it.
My good gods, how morbid. I didn't mean for it to come out like that, honest.
I think it's time I went to go eat dinner.
