OotP Review, Part I

Part the First.

Characters
Harry: Harry was really let down this book (not a let down :D). He grew up a lot, mostly because the adults in his life were occupied, a failure to him, or some other such disappointment a lot of the time. He yelled a lot too, but then, everyone needs that now and again. He was a frustrated young man and it seems like yelling is the only way he knows how to get it out. He’s truly an amazing boy, Faced-The-Dark-Lord-Umpteen-Times-And-Survived or no. He’s grown snarkier, but I think that’s mostly because he doesn’t like being lied to (or not told the whole truth), and in return his patience has grown short.

Ron: I did not have him pegged for a prefect. But I'm glad he got it! And I'm happy that he's on the Quidditch team, and he wasn't just a complete natural like in some fics -- no sir, he worked for it! Weasley is our king, indeed. :) He's got a bit of growing up to do, but what boy at 15 doesn't? I think he can be Head Boy. I'd love to see him get his Erised.

Hermione: I love this girl to pieces. I wish I were as smart as her. Seriously. Calling up Rita Skeeter to write up the article for the Quibbler. Leading Umbridge in the forest to the centaurs. She loves her boys, and she'll take care of them.

Ginny: Look, she grew a personality! :D Seriously, I loved Ginny here. She's "given up on Harry" (frankly, so would I), and look how she's coming into her own! I think she's going to grow up like her mother. Good, strong witch. She's got quite the sense of humor, can lie to Molly with a straight face, and brings Harry down a peg or two when he's in "poor me" mode. I particularly liked when she reminded him that she had been posessed by Voldemort (or, his sixteen-year-old self at any rate). I predict nothing but growth for her!

Fred and George: Absolutely stunning. They must've made quite a bit peddling their tricks, hopefully they keep inventing new products for us to laugh at! Hermione better watch out, or she'll end up impressed. ;) The fireworks were brilliant, a great trick, and the swamp was even greater. Their flight from the school was a stroke of genius, and very great of them! I also loved how Peeves bowed to Fred when he told Peeves to give them hell. They are the stuff Hogwarts legends are made of. :)

Neville: Rocked my socks SO SO hard! I'm so impressed. He's really grown up from the bumbling, forgetful student we all know and love. He's really come into his own. He's definitely growing into a Gryffindor! After he was going to attack Malfoy for his flippant comment about a mental ward at St. Mungo's, Neville earned my loff. :)

Luna: She seems like the kind of person I would be friends with (when their head wasn't in the clouds, that is). Actually, she kind of makes me think of myself at times. I think she's got a crush on Ron, in her unorthodox, Luna-ish way. She was very cool, and I think she and Harry will go on to be better friends.

Cho: She and Harry dated, it didn't work out, and that's fine. Frankly, I think she was looking for closure in all the wrong places. Granted, mentioning she used to go to that tea room with Cedric while on a date with Harry with Roger Davies sucking face at the next table was an awkward situation, at best. I don't hate her, I just think she and Harry weren't compatible.

Draco: Still a git. Not much else to say except he’s still very contemptible.

Percy: Shock doesn't even begin to cover it. I think I've said just about all that can be said in the OBHWF forum at FAP, but I'll summarize: he seemed almost a caricature of Percy in the first four books. He's always been a rule following git, but here… well, I think there's more going on than meets the eye. But sending back the Weasley sweater was the ultimate dis.

Molly and Arthur: There is not a thing to dislike about this couple, IMHO. They are still themselves in the face of another war, and they are working bravely and hard to help the Order run smooth. I'm sure there's nothing Molly will enjoy more than making sure that members of the Order take care of themselves, and her only crime is loving her children too much, if you can consider that a crime. Its obvious that Percy disowning the family hurt her deeply, the poor woman. :(

Arthur is still his likable, Muggle-loving self, although that seems more dangerous now than ever. I sobbed (no kidding) in relief when he didn't die, because… dude. Arthur : Ministry :: Dumbledore : Hogwarts.

Dumbledore: There was less of him in this book, which wasn't always a bad thing. I will agree, he's got style. I hope we can see more of him next time around. I'm glad he was restored to the Wizengamot and etc. after being slandered like crazy. Glad it got proven he's not just an old coot out to overthrow the ministry. :)

Sirius: I don't think he's grown up… just aged. Not to play psychiatrist, but I think in addition to PTSD he might've been bi-polar. Slightly. But enough of my half-baked theories, I was just… sad to see him go. It was so quick, but, maybe that's the way it should have been, without bells and whistles. And I agree with Hermione… "he's just been lonely for a long time."

Snape: Harry grossly underestimates Professor Snape. They both need to let go of grudges. I'm not saying they're not well-founded, but they need to let go. The occlumency lessons is a perfect example. Harry should not have gotten into the pensieve, but Snape should not have put a stop to the lessons all together. And since we've been in Snape's mind, I can't help but want to see more. Dangerous, I know, but since when does that hold me off? :D

Other members of the Order:
*Lupin: I'm including him in here, because I don't have much to say. Very compassionate, i.e. visiting the werewolf in the ward at St. Mungo's. Also definitely a peacemaker (usually between Molly and Sirius).
*Tonks: She rocked. XD She didn't strike me as Mary Sueish, just young compared to the rest of the Order. She would have been young when the last war ended, so she's just fresh.
*Moody: I think I like Real!Moody better than Pseudo!Moody. The bowler pulled over the magical eye was a nice touch. And who does he know who's gotten buttocks shot off? XD
*Mundungus: Shifty character, but I like him nonetheless. We'll see where he goes.
*Arabella Figg: I'm guessing she's a member of the Order, even if it never really said. I think everyone saw "magical" coming, but I don't think anyone saw "squib"! My favorite bit was attacking Mundungus with the sack of cat food.

Teachers:
I didn't really give teachers (aside from Snape) one thought or another either way through the first four books, but they all kicked ass in this book.
*McGonagall: I have a feeling she's going to get through this war fine, and take a few people with her. I felt horrible when she was stunned by four people, but she got through. Tough as nails, her. My respect grew for her, being so loyal to Dumbledore. And I loved "Potter… I will assist you to become an auror if it is the last thing I do! If I have to coach you nightly I will make sure you achieve the required results!" XD
*Flitwick: ^_^ What is there to say? Wasn't sure he had the authority!
*Trelawney: She may be a bit of a flake… but she's the real article. And I don't think that anyone actually wanted her to be sacked.

Evil people:
*Bellatrix Lestrange: Wow. She is evil. She's the sort of character that I have absolutely no sympathy for and love to hate. I know I said I wanted a Minerva/Molly/Mrs. Lestrange showdown, but I'm not sure I want either of them tangling with her. It seemed as though Mrs. Lestrange was the only competent Death Eater at the DoM. And, Voldemort/Bellatrix, the new Tom/Ginny. Am I right, or am I wrong?
*Lucius Malfoy: Eurgh. Hate him even more. Unfortunately, as we know, money talks, and Lucius has plenty of it.

The Ministry:
*Fudge: Well, he's finally eating his words along with a big helping of Crow. That makes me feel better. :) But I still can’t help but shudder. Everything about this man just rubs me the wrong way.
*Umbridge: What a cow. There was nothing I liked about her. Maybe I just don't like having my civil liberties taken away (oh, wait…), but she made me really angry.

Miscellaneous
*Roger Davies: Waah he’s not like that, really!
*Zacarias Smith: Who shoved the broomstick up his arse?
*Seamus Finnigan: I was sort of sad when he said he didn’t believe Harry. :( But now it’s sorted itself out. Phew.
*Ernie MacMillan: Heh. :)
