Write your congressman/woman and ask them to veto it, please. Not everyone is a Christian, I know understand that, but the fellow Christians on my friends list... we are called to pray for peace.
Dear Sir (or Madam, as situation allowed):
My name is Elizabeth S****. I am seventeen years old and a junior in high school in DeWitt, Iowa, near the Quad Cities. Through one of my friends, a new bill has been brought to my attention as is detailed here:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:HE00153:@@@L&summ2=m&
I must ask you to vote against this bill. To declare a day of "fasting and prayer" to secure God's help in the war against Iraq is not only arrogant, but disgusting and selfish.
As a Christian, I am called not to pray for "us" to win. I am called to pray for peace and a solution that is in the best interests of all. In Amos 5:21-24, it reads:
"I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and cereal offerings, I will not accept them, and the peace offerings of your fatted beasts I will not look upon. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness an everflowing stream."
God isn't a mercenary, you can't entice him to one side or the other. God loves all his children the same, and war and conflict saddens Him. If you want to have a prayer/fasting day for peace or a quick end to this war, fine. But do not expect me to pray just for myself, even if it is a Federal statue. If this bill is passed, I will lose more faith in the current government.
I thank you for your time and alacrity.
Sincerely yours,
Elizabeth M. S****
