One year

I didn't know most of you one year ago. I knew [livejournal.com profile] thegreatvoodini, [livejournal.com profile] relic5_5, but I didn't know most of you. None of you will know/remember this, but today is the one year anniversary of me totaling the driver's ed car.

The weather today is even like it was last year, a bit rainy and becoming sunshiney in the afternoon. I was on a two-lane, county highway north of Calamus, IA, heading south, and told to pass a humungous tanker truck in front of us. I was perfectly content at going 45 mph, but he told me he'd walk me through it EVEN THOUGH WE HADN'T COVERED IT IN CLASS YET. So, me, being the pushover that I was then, went ahead and did it. I changed lanes, passed him, and looked in the mirror for the headlights so I knew I was safe to get over in the original lane. I kept my eyes there too long, and drifted to the left shoulder. I panicked, overcorrected, fishtailed, and drove into the left side ditch. By this point I was frozen beyond pumping the brake or anything, and I hit a creek bed and flipped, back over front. Most people think I ROLLED the car as in side over side. No. Flipped.

I had to get three stitches in my left knee. My driving partner that day (who wasn't even my real driving partner, mine hadn't showed up!) had to glue the cut in his forehead shut (not sure how they did that), and the driving instructor was fine. We were all wet, muddy, and I had duckweed in my hair. If you've never had duckweed in your hair, hope that you never have to. Its damn near impossible to get out.

The car was totaled. I got to go see it at the car dealership the next day, here and here are pictures. (If the links don't work, add two question marks [??] to the end of the URL. It sounds weird, but it works!)

Things I learned:
*Keep your eyes moving while driving.
*Buckle your seatbelt.
*Never do something your instructor tells you to do if you haven't covered it yet. (That's for you Driver's Ed people out there.)

Thank you. That is your Public Service Announcement for the day. You may go about your lives now.

I might be getting a car! Squee with me!

Oh wow. I'm glad you're all right! That's quite an ordeal. And people wonder why I get very nervous driving...

*squees for Liz*

But ack, your experience sounds terrifying. If I'd known you a year ago, would probably have been worried sick. As it is now, I'm just glad you're okay and such.

Don't think I will be learning to drive highways in the rain when I haven't been taught things yet, thanks to this story. Did that sentence make any sense at all?

I knew you back then. Hmph. I laughed hard at that, too (once I found out you were alive and well). Figures ya wouldn't remember lil ol' me. Heehee, alright, running now, MAJOR sunburn on forehead... can't... raise... eyebrow... at... stupid... people. Will... never... survive.
