I watched Berkley in the Sixties for class tomorrow.

Part of it showed footage of antiwar demonstration efforts to shut down the draft center in Oakley. On the first day they failed, but they were still there. They showed one man telling the men going into the center, "You don't have to go. You don't have to go. You don't have to go." One man in the line soon enough seized him by the shirt collar. I don't remember what he said, but it was with a vicious snarl. "You don't have to go," he repeated, calmly. The man shoved the other away and stalked on into the draft office, and the other stayed there and continued to say, "You don't have to go." As long as I live I don't know if I'll ever forget the look in the antiwar protestor's eyes when the other guy took him by the shirt front and snarled at him.

It was love.

Of course, at the same time (or shortly thereafter) people were spitting at traumatized veterans returning home. Not to belittle the man's compassion... just to mention the other side of the coin.

Do we? I was raised by hippies, I usually have to remind myself the other way around.

I'll admit that I didn't know much about the Vietnam conflict until I got to college (since high school American history tends to go up to World War II and just sort of stop) but the one thing I associated with it from all sides was some sort of violence or conflict, taking non-violent civil disobedience into account.

The video was just so unlike any other video clip I've seen associated with the period. It moved me, is all.
