David did used to be the Doctor -- he left the show in 2009, and the Doctor regenerated and this is what he looks like now. :D
I was like, "But but David ;_;" because he was Doctor when I started watching, but I gave Matt a chance and... I try not to play favorites with Doctors because they are all the same character, and each actor brings out different things about him, but Matt Smith is so amazing. He's only 29 now (the only reason I can tell you that is because of the birthday thing, I promise XD) but he is such a thoughtful actor and very mature that he carries all that emotional weight so well.
I don't just love him as the Doctor, though that's where a lot of his exposure comes from because he is a young actor and it's such an iconic role. I got to meet him briefly (OH SO BRIEFLY) in April at that Barnes and Noble DVD signing, and honestly he was just so nice and gracious (all three were -- Karen and Arthur who were with him play his traveling companions on the show). I know that some people are like, well obviously he was nice, but you really can tell the difference when someone is a nice person and when they're doing publicity because they kind of have to.
(And honestly he is EXACTLY the sort of guy I've had crushes on my entire life. Not exactly hot at a first glance, but a lot of personality and charm. If you have a spare couple of hours I'd definitely check the show out. It's one of my favorite things. XD)
