So I finally watched Inception while Kitty was here. I need to watch it again, but yeah. That was a mind screw but it was a brilliant mind screw which I enjoyed way too much. I'm so glad Leonardo DiCaprio was not just a good looking actor whose star flared out after Titanic, Joseph Gordon-Levitt... well, who thought the skinny little kid in 3rd Rock from the Sun was going to grow into all that talent. (Also he looks good in waistcoats. I want to costume him so hard. And that's not a metaphor for anything, I have a thing for getting a guy in a suit.) Tom Hardy's voice is like butter. Everyone else... I can't even.

So speaking of, and because I don't want to talk about what I'm doing in order to prepare for the semester and going back to New York, my thoughts on the Oscars:

I am not shocked (but disappointed) Chris Nolan wasn't honored with a directing nomination. Like I said to Kitty on Twitter, one day the Academy will realize how much fucking work science fiction is, but it is not this day. It was, however, nominated for Original Screenplay and I will be super happy if it wins. Chris Nolan wrote the script and by all accounts it was his labor of love -- the reason he took the Batman movies in the first place, so he would have experience with big budget films. So he has been recognized for his hard work and his creative leaps and bounds. It was an excellent film and it had beautiful effects and visuals and the ensemble was strong -- but the script was really where that all started. So I feel good about that nomination.

The King's Speech, however, was a phenomenal movie and could give it a run for it's movie. That said, for my money, the strength of that film was really the acting. Colin Firth AT LEAST deserves to go home with his award, as well as Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. The performances were delightful.

That said, I loved Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network (although I don't think he'll win -- too young) and Andrew Garfield was ROBBED, which is a shame because I was awed by that movie. It was also honored with a directing nomination for David Fincher and an adapted screenplay award for Aaron Sorkin. Aaron Sorkin is one of my favorite writers ever, so I would be pleased if he won. (That said, I wouldn't be shocked if 127 Hours snagged it. That movie is Oscar Bait.) For my money, Social Network deserves directing because that movie was so tight on every level -- the acting ensemble was phenomenal, the script was smart and it was relevant, and that is also why I wouldn't be upset if it took home Best Picture.

I don't know who'll take home Best Picture. Although this year I've actually SEEN some of them.

I know people get in a snit over the Oscars and I'll try not to, I promise. Maybe this year my cable company won't be a bag of dicks and I'll actually get to watch. \o/
