Picspam: My 10 Favorite Episodes of New!Doctor Who

This month's challenge at [livejournal.com profile] picspammy is brain twins, so basically that means two people are picspamming on the same topic. It's kind of fun to see what two different people will come up with on the same topic. Aaaaand I wanted to do favorite episodes of New!Who. So [livejournal.com profile] defyxgravityx volunteered to do it with me -- I'll post the link to hers when it gets posted. (ETA: Hers is here.)

I put these in chronological order. I could have tried to rank them according to my favorites, but it was already hard enough choosing ten. I think this list changed four or five times, and there are only so many hours in the day. I'm doing another one next week, so watch out for that. (Also, yes, I did lots of quotes. Get over it.) But for now:

1. Father's Day (1.08)

The Doctor: Right. That's the first you and me. It's a very bad idea, two sets of us being here at the same time. Just be careful they don't see us. Wait 'til she runs off and he follows, then go to your dad.
Rose: I can't do this.
The Doctor: You don't have to do anything you don't want to do, but this is the last time we can be here.

Pete: It's... it's like I trusted you. Moment I met you, I just did. A wound in time... You called me Dad. I can see it... my eyes... Jackie's attitude... you sound like her when you shout... [He touches her face.] You are. You are.... you're my Rose. You're my Rose grown up.

Pete: For once in your life, trust me. It's got be done. You've got to survive, because you've got to bring up our daughter. I never read you those bedtime stories. I never took you on those picnics. I was never there for you.
Rose: You would've been.
Pete: But I can do this for you. I can be a proper dad to you now.
Rose: But it's not fair.
Pete: I've had all these extra hours. No-one else in the world has ever had that. And on top of that... I get to see you -- and you're beautiful. How lucky am I, eh? So, come on... do as your dad says. Are you going to be there for me, love? [Rose nods.] Thanks for saving me.

2. New Earth (2.01)

The Doctor: Strictly speaking, it's the fifteenth New York since the original. So that makes it New New New New New New New New New New New New New New York.

Rose!Cassandra: Oh my God. I'm a chav!

Doctor!Cassandra: Ooh, my. Well this is... different.
Rose: Cassandra?
Doctor!Cassandra: Goodness me, I'm a man! Yum! So many parts... and hardly used. [clutches the Doctor's chest] Oh, two hearts! [dancing to the dual heartbeat] Oh baby, I'm beating out a samba!
Rose: Get out of him!
Doctor!Cassandra: Oh, he's slim. And a little bit foxy! You thought so, too. I've been inside your head, you've been looking... you like it.

The Doctor: You were supposed to be dying.
The Face of Boe: There are better things to do today. Dying can wait.

3. Doomsday (2.13)

Cyberman: Our species our similar, though your design is inelegant.
Dalek Thay: Daleks have no concept of elegance.
Cyberman: This is obvious.

Dalek Sek: The Doctor will open the Ark!
The Doctor: [Contemptuous laugh.] The Doctor will not.

The Doctor: They're part of the problem. And THAT makes them part of the solution. Oh yes! Well?! Isn't anyone gonna ask? What is it with the glasses?
Rose: [Grin.] What is it with the glasses?
The Doctor: I can SEE! That's what! 'Cos we've got two separate worlds, but in-between the two separate worlds, we've got the Void. That's where the Daleks were hiding. And the Cybermen travelled through the Void to get here! And you lot - one world to another, via the Void! Oh, I like that. Via the Void! Look! [He presses the glasses onto Rose's face.] I've been through it. Do you see? Void stuff!

Rose: Am I ever gonna see you again?
The Doctor: You can't.
Rose: What're you gonna do?
The Doctor: Oh, I've got the TARDIS. Same old life. Last of the Time Lords.
Rose: On your own?
Rose: I love you.
The Doctor: Quite right, too. [Pause.] And I suppose... if it's one last chance to say it... Rose Tyler -- [Transmission ends.]

4. The Family of Blood (3.09)

Son of Mine: What do you know of history? What do you know of next year?
Headmaster: You're not making sense.
Son of Mine: 1914, sir. Because the Family has traveled far and wide looking for Mr. Smith and oh, the things we have seen! War is coming. In foreign fields, war of the whole wide world, with all your boys falling down in the mud. Do you think they will thank the man who taught them it was glorious?

Tim Latimer: He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun.
John Smith: Stop it.
Tim Latimer: He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe.
John Smith: Stop! I said stop it!
Tim Latimer: And... he's wonderful.

John Smith: You knew this all along and yet you watched while Nurse Redfern and I—
Martha: I didn't know how to stop you! He gave me a list of things to watch out for but that wasn't included.
John Smith: Falling in love, that didn't even occur to him?
Martha: [Beat.] No.
John Smith: Then what sort of a man is that?

Son of Mine: He never raised his voice. That was the worst thing—the fury of the Time Lord—and then we discovered why. Why this Doctor, who had fought with gods and demons, why he had run away from us and hidden... He was being kind. He wrapped my father in unbreakable chains forged in the heart of a dwarf star. He tricked my mother into the event horizon of a collapsing galaxy to be imprisoned there, forever. He still visits my sister, once a year, every year. I wonder if one day he might forgive her, but there she is. Can you see? He trapped her inside a mirror. Every mirror. If ever you look at your reflection and see something move behind you just for a second, that's her. That's always her. As for me, I was suspended in time and the Doctor put me to work standing over the fields of England, as their protector. We wanted to live forever... so the Doctor made sure we did.

5. Blink (3.10)

Cathy: Why did you come here anyway?
Sally: I love old things. They make me feel sad.
Cathy: What's good about sad?
Sally: It's happy for deep people.

The Doctor: People don't understand time. It's not what you think it is.
Sally: Then what is it?
The Doctor: Complicated.
Sally: Tell me.
The Doctor: Very complicated.
Sally: I'm clever, and I'm listening, and don't patronise me because people have died and I'm not happy. Tell me.
The Doctor: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect... but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly... timey-wimey... stuff.

The Doctor: [On video.] The Angels have the phone box.
Larry: "The Angels have the phone box." That's my favourite; I've got that on a t-shirt!

The Doctor: And that's it, I'm afraid, there's no more from you on the transcript, that's the last I've got. I don't know what stopped you talking, but I can guess: they're coming; the Angels are coming for you, but listen—your life could depend on this -- don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast, faster than you could believe. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck.

6. Forest of the Dead (4.09)

Vashta Nerada: These are our forests, they are our meat. [spreads out to attack the Doctor]
The Doctor: Don't play games with me. You just killed someone I liked and that is not a safe place to stand! [The Vashta Nerada continue to spread.] I'm the Doctor and you're in the biggest Library in the universe. [Beat.] Look me up.

The Doctor: Why am I handcuffed? ... Why would you even have handcuffs?
River Song: [Flirtatious.] Spoilers.

River Song: Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean, you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver; that should've been a clue. [The Doctor tries unsuccesfully to reach their sonic screwdrivers.] There's nothing you can do.
The Doctor: You can let me do this!
River Song: If you die here, it'll mean I've never met you!
The Doctor: Time can be rewritten!
River Song: Not those times! Not one line! Don't you dare! It's okay. It's okay, it's not over for you. You'll see me again. You've got all of that to come. You and me, time and space. You watch us run!
The Doctor: River, you know my name! You whispered my name in my ear! There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There's only one time I could...
River Song: Hush, now! Spoilers.

7. Amy's Choice (5.07)

The Doctor: Woah! Hey! You swallowed a planet!
Amy: I'm pregnant!
The Doctor: You're huge!
Amy: Yeah, I'm pregnant.
The Doctor: And look at you, when worlds collide!
Amy: Doctor, I'm pregnant.
The Doctor: Five years later, and you two haven't changed a bit, other than age and... size.
Amy: It's good to see you again, Doctor.
The Doctor: ... are you pregnant?

The Doctor: There's something that doesn't make sense. Let's go and poke it with a stick. [Grins.]

The Dream Lord: "Friends"? Is that the right word for people you acquire? ... The old prefers the company of the young.

Amy: This is the dream. Definitely this one. Now - if we die here, we wake up, yeah?
The Doctor: Unless we just die.
Amy: Either way, this is my only chance of seeing him again. This is the dream.
The Doctor: How do you know?
Amy: Because if this is real, I don't want it! I don't want it.

8. Vincent and the Doctor (5.10)

Amy: I'm sorry you're so sad.
Vincent: But I'm not! Sometimes these moods torture me for weeks or months. But I'm good now. If Amy Pond can soldier on, then so can Vincent Van Gogh.
Amy: I'm not soldiering on, I'm fine.
Vincent: Oh, Amy. I hear the song of your sadness, you've lost someone I think.
Amy: I'm not sad.
Vincent: Then why are you crying? [Amy touches her face.] It's all right. I understand.
Amy: I'm not sure I do.

Vincent: But you're not armed!
The Doctor: I am.
Vincent: What with?
The Doctor: Overconfidence, this, and a small screwdriver. I'm absolutely sorted.

Vincent: Hold my hand, Doctor. Try to see what I see. We're so lucky we're still alive to see this beautiful world! Look at the sky. It's not dark and black and without character. The black is in fact deep blue, and over there! Lighter blue, and blowing through the blueness and the blackness, the wind swirling through there. And then shining, bursting through, the stars! Can you see, how they roar their light? Everywhere we look, complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes!

Dr. Black: Well, um. Big question, but... to me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time, the most beloved, his command of color the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had every done it before. Perhpas no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world's greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.

The Doctor: The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice-versa; the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

9. The Pandorica Opens (5.12)

The Doctor: You graffitied the oldest cliff face in the universe.
River Song: You wouldn't answer your phone.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster... Or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: How did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: [To Amy.] I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

The Doctor: Hello, Stonehenge! Who takes the Pandorica, takes the universe! But, bad news everyone, 'cause guess who! Ha! Listen, you lot! You're all whizzing about. It's really very distracting. Could you all just stay still a minute because I - AM - TALKING! [The ships stop instantly.] Now the question of the hour is, "Who's got the Pandorica?" Answer: I do. Next question: Who's coming to take it from me? Come on! Look at me! No plan, no back-up, no weapons worth a damn! Oh, and something else I don't have: anything to lose! So! If you're sitting up there in your silly little spaceships with all your silly little guns and you've got any plans on taking the Pandorica tonight, just remember who's standing in your way! Remember every black day I ever stopped you and then, and then... do the smart thing: Let somebody else try first. [The battleships all flee to a much higher orbit. The Doctor turns to Rory.] That should keep them squabbling for half an hour.

10. The Big Bang (5.13)

Auton Rory: So, the universe ended. You missed that. In 102 AD. I suppose this means you and I never get born at all... twice in my case. [beat.] You would've laughed at that. Please laugh. The Doctor said the universe was huge and ridiculous and sometimes there were miracles. I could do with a ridiculous mircacle about now.
The Doctor: [appears in front of Rory wearing a fez and holding a mop.] Rory, listen! She's not dead... well, she is dead, but it's not the end of the world... well, it is the end of the world. Actually, it's the end of the universe. Ooh no, hang on. [He disappears.]
Auton Rory: Doctor!
The Doctor: [Reappears, sans mop.] You need to get me out of the Pandorica.
Auton Rory: But you're not in the Pandorica.
The Doctor: Yes I am. Well, now I'm not, but I was back then... which is "now" from your point of view, which is "back then" from my point of view. Time travel, you can't keep it straight in your head!

River Song: I have questions, but number one is this: What in the name of sanity have you got on your head?
The Doctor: It's a fez. I wear a fez now. Fezes are cool.

Dalek: Records Indicate you will show mercy; you are an associate of the Doctor.
River Song: I'm River Song. [Aims.] Check your records again.
Dalek: ...Mercy?
River Song: Say it again?
Dalek: Mercy!
River Song: One more time.
Dalek: Mercy!

The Doctor: You just remember...and they'll be there.
Amy: You won't.
The Doctor: You'll have your family back. You won't need your imaginary friend anymore. Amy Pond...crying over me, eh? Guess what.
Amy: What?
The Doctor: [As the Pandorica closes.] Gotcha.

The Doctor: It's funny. I thought if you could hear me I could hang on somehow. Silly me. Silly old Doctor. When you wake up you'll have a Mum and Dad, and you won't remember me. Well, you'll remember me a little. I'll be a story in your head. That's okay, we're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one. 'Cause it was, you know. It was the best. A daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away. Did I ever tell you that I stole it? Well, borrowed it; I was always gonna give it back someday. Oh, that box, Amy. You'll dream about that box. It'll never leave you. Big and little at the same time. Brand new and ancient. And the bluest blue ever. And the times we had. Would've had. Never had. In your dreams they'll still be there. The Doctor and Amy Pond. And the days that never came. The cracks are closing. But they can't close properly 'til I'm on the other side. I don't belong here any more. I think I'll skip the rest of the rewind. I hate repeats. Live well. Love Rory. Bye bye, Pond.

The Doctor: Something's come up, so this will have to be goodbye.
Amy: Yeah I think it is good-bye. D'you think it is goodbye?
Rory: Definitely good-bye.
Amy: [Looks out the TARDIS and shouts.] Goodbye!

Nice selection of eps and quotes - I usually find one or not in these kind of lists that I ahte or think HOW CAN YOU LIKE THAT EP!? But i love all of these.

[identity profile] silvia-elisa.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that if I had to choose, ultimately these would be my choices as well. Good job! :) Also, it's the first time I've noticed that Sally wears pretty much the same outfit all through the ep. Hehe.
sea_thoughts: Ruby in *The Legend of Ruby Sunday* (Friendship - mars-mellow)

[personal profile] sea_thoughts 2010-08-22 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, this is a beautiful selection. You like the weepies, huh? :)

Just one thing: the Dream Lord says 'is that the right word for the people you acquire?'

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was a hard choice, and there were a lot that just barely weren't on there, but I'm glad I managed to hit on ones that others like too. :)

I think most of Blink takes place in a relatively compact space of time (for Sally, anyway) so yes. I love Carey Mulligan, she's so wonderful in that ep.

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, guilty. :) I'm totally into the whole catharsis thing.

Thanks, I'll fix that. ♥ I put that one in from memory, so.

[identity profile] chiroro.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my goodness, so much love for the episodes you've chosen. I mean seriously. I love your episode choices and the quotes you've used. Gorgeous editing too :)

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I'm glad to be in a majority for once. XD I saw a list once that had Love and Monsters and I was like "Uh."

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :)

♥♥ Awesome picspam!

[identity profile] margo-kim.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Father's Day. I cried so hard when I saw that the first time (and the second and maybe the third). I can pinpoint it as the exact episode I started to love Doctor Who. I love all the caps, especially the ones of Vincent. Amy's so cute among the sunflowers.

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Agh so did I. *shares the kleenex* I cried just skipping through these eps in order to cap them.

I did a bigger picspam of Vincent and the Doctor, which I've watched probably dozens of times. :) If you want to see that one you can click on my picspam tag.

AMAZING! just amazing!

beautiful and good job, I love all these episodes sfm!
memming.

[identity profile] femaelstrom27.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
...There is someone in this world who likes "Love and Monsters"?!

Somehow, this is more boggling to me than the existence of Creationists.

[identity profile] femaelstrom27.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, gorgeous picspam! A lot of these would be in my top favorites as well. "Father's Day" is amazing. Also, I like how so many of these are from season 5...it was so well done, wasn't it?

I love the weepy-cathartic eps as well. Actually, yeah, more than half of these make me bawww my eyes out. (I remember the first time I saw "Doomsday" and literally could not stop crying. It was embarrassing.) And ohh, in "The Big Bang," when the Doctor says "You'll have your family back. You won't need your imaginary friend anymore" I started crying and didn't stop for the rest of the episode. UH OK now I am getting teary-eyed just thinking about all these episodes, so I should probably stop talking and go to bed now.

[identity profile] oswin.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
:) i love your picspam and how we got some the same :)
nice selection of quotes

[identity profile] canyon_deye.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
I love your choices. <3 Very much agree with the season 5 ones especially. ;)
And it's prettyyyy!

[identity profile] be-my-constant.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
they don't just like them, it's a fav episode! <3 haha. I think it's like marmite to fandom.

[identity profile] ravenclawreject.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh. Veryyyy nice choices. And lovely picspam as well. <3

[identity profile] crayon-harkness.livejournal.com 2010-08-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*hides* I loved 'love and monsters' :)
Don't know why really, just do lol.

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-23 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
If I watch it, I watch it for Shirley Henderson because I love her, but still.

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-23 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I loved season five so much it makes it easy to forget that I love a good 80% of 1-4 just as much. I tried not to let five overshadow it too much. I was going to choose just the Pandorica Opens or just Big Bang, but I couldn't do it. I had to have both. XD

(I remember the first time I saw "Doomsday" and literally could not stop crying. It was embarrassing.)

Omgggggg. I was watching it on my laptop with earphones in because I was in the living room. My dad was watching something on the TV and I was just bawling. He just gave me these sidelong looks but didn't say anything. XD

"You'll have your family back. You won't need your imaginary friend anymore"

;_; I sniffled most of my way through his speech to sleeping Amelia, and his good bye.;____;

UH OK now I am getting teary-eyed just thinking about all these episodes

XD I got weepy rewatching/capping, so it's okay. Have a good weep on the Doctor.

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-23 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I love quotes almost as much as I love picspamming. XD

[identity profile] dramaturgy.livejournal.com 2010-08-23 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
... With that icon you can say pretty much whatever you like and I think 95% of the internet will be like YEAH OKAY I AGREE!
